Firefox in Vietnamese

Firefox 3.5 is now available for download! This is the first official release in Vietnamese. If you already have Firefox in a different language, like English, language packs are available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux – look for the file named “vi.xpi”. You can install one atop your current installation of Firefox, regardless of the original language.

For those who can’t let go of the past, Jasper Jasper Thái has created unofficial language packs for Firefox 2.0 and Firefox 3.0 (alpha).

Thunderbird 3 in Vietnamese

Thunderbird 3.0 beta 2 is now available for testing. This version is the first available in Vietnamese. If you don’t want to download a separate copy of Thunderbird, language packs are available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux – look for the files named “vi.xpi”. You can install a language pack atop your current installation of Thunderbird, regardless of the original language.

Sunbird in Vietnamese

For those who don’t mind their data getting corrupted every now and then, nightlies of Sunbird 1.0 are available in Vietnamese – look for the files marked “vi”. Caution: Sunbird 1.0 is not even in alpha testing yet and may be unstable.

AVIM Extension

Install the extension at its official website, Firefox Add-ons, SeaMonkey Add-ons, Fennec Add-ons, or Songbird Add-ons. Or download it from Thunderbird Add-ons, the ActiveState Community Site, Spicebird Add-ons, or ohloh.

It doesn’t matter where you download it from: there’s only one installer.

Vietnamese Dictionary

Install the extension at the original blog post, Firefox Add-ons, or SeaMonkey Add-ons. Or download it from the official website or Thunderbird Add-ons.

Thunderbird 1.5 in Vietnamese

Well, it’s finally September, and Minh has actually created something you can download: a language pack, in wonderful XPI format! Unfortunately, the language pack is not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0. Minh is currently updating it to work in more recent versions.

To use Thunderbird in Vietnamese using the XPI language pack, you must have Thunderbird 1.5 installed; this language pack will not run with earlier versions of Thunderbird.

  1. Drag this link into the Thunderbird Extension Manager window. If that doesn’t work, save the file and choose it by clicking on the Install button in the Extension Manager.
  2. Once Thunderbird opens the file, it will ask you if you want to install it. Click on the Install button once it becomes available.
  3. The Extension Manager should now list an extension named vi, and it should say that it’ll be installed after you restart. Close Thunderbird.
  4. In Microsoft Windows, open the Start menu and select Run.... On other operating systems, open up your command line.
  5. Type in the following command: thunderbird.exe -UILocale vi

Thunderbird should now start, and the interface should be in Vietnamese. To revert it to English, use the following command: thunderbird.exe -UILocale xx-YY -contentLocale YY, where xx is the original language packs’s ISO language code and YY is the original region pack’s country code. So, for example, you would enter the following: thunderbird.exe -UILocale en-US -contentLocale US

Alternatively, you can download a JAR archive that masquerades as the English language pack, which you can then drop directly into Thunderbird’s chrome directory. Be sure, however, to first backup your original en-US.jar file.

The vi project can be contacted through the mailing list or the member list.
